In addition to these financing program, Self-Help also works with state and national organizations to develop effective regulatory and legislative policies that will help the poor build and protect their assets. Self-Help was instrumental in forming the Coalition for Responsible Lending, which spearheaded a successful effort to pass predatory mortgage lending legislation in North Carolina and is now assisting other states with anti-predatory lending proposals. Self-Help has also developed model federal homeownership tax credit legislation and played a pivotal role in the passage of the federal New Markets Tax Credit legislation in 2000.
