Senate Bill 22 - Educational Assistance for Veterans
August 2007
The “Post 9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2007” is a bill that would establish a program of educational assistance for Armed Forces members who have served after September 11, 2001. It is meant to update the current educational assistance program for veterans, which the sponsorers of the bill believe is outmoded and designed for peacetime service. The bill was introduced in January 2007 in the U.S. Senate by Senator James Webb (D-VA). The new benefits package offered under the bill would include coverage of tuition, room and board, and a monthly stipend of $1000. The existing law provides veterans with support of up to $800 per month for educational expenses, “but does not necessarily offer the full cost of higher education or career training,” according to a statement from Sen. Webb’s office. Please see below for full text of bill in text format.
